COLUMBIA, S.C. Participating in a fishing competition sponsored by Pure Fishing, 13-year-old Jonathan Dawes of Tacoma, Wash, caught a 5-pound, 1-ounce catfish that earned him and his father an all-expense paid fishing trip in Alabama with Berkley pro and television celebrity Hank Parker.

“I had lots of fun just casting and catching fish, but to catch the biggest fish and win the contest is unbelievable,” Dawes said. “The jamboree was awesome, and the fishing was one of the best events that I participated in. I’m looking forward to fishing with Mr. Parker.”

Dawes, a Life Scout, won the trip at the recent 2010 National Scout Jamboree, which celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The event took place July 26 to August 4 at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia and was attended by more than 30,000 Scouts and 9,000 staff and more than 30,000 visitors.

“I can’t wait to get on the water with Jonathan,” Parker said. “He is an exceptional young man that exemplifies the Boy Scouts of America and its love for the outdoors. We’re planning to film our outing this October for airing during the 2011 season of “Hank Parker’s Outdoor Magazine.”

Pure Fishing developed programs with the BSA to create a stronger fishing presence at the jamboree. Pure Fishing operated educational exhibits such as the Berkley PowerBait Fish Tank, a fishing line knot tester, and casting technique demonstrations. It also provided custom Stren knot-tying cards for all participants. Scouts earned a one-of-a-kind special issue Fish Hook Lake Patch by catching a fish during the jamboree.

“We are very pleased with Jonathan and his catch,” said David Lund, Pure Fishing Vice President of Marketing – The Americas. “Pure Fishing is proud to partner with Boy Scouts and help with the development of these young people to become better citizens and outdoorsmen.”

Over 25,000 Scouts fished with Shakespeare rods and reels and used Berkley PowerBait and Gulp! to catch over 20,000 pounds of catfish during the Jamboree.

Columbia, S.C. (July 28, 2010) Reading, writing, and arithmetic seem a bit pass. Students today study anything from engineering to Mozart to interior design. Even fishing and conservation are on the curriculum in public schools with the help of the Future Fisherman Foundation and a grant from Pure Fishing.

Pure Fishing is actively involved with youth aquatic education, said David Lund, Vice President of Marketing -The Americas. We are dedicated to engaging the public in fishing and conservation education and programs. We believe it is our responsibility to recruit new anglers. Bringing fishing opportunities to high school and middle school students is one way to fulfill that mission.

Recent studies have shown that if a person does not engage in fishing activities by the age of 18, chances are they will never develop an interest. The Future Fisherman Foundation helps public, private and charter schools incorporate the benefits and rewards of fishing, boating and aquatic conservation activities into their school curriculum. Training and resources are available to school-based programs for grades K-12.

Pure Fishings generous donation will enable us to teach our curriculum to educators who want to incorporate youth fishing activities into their learning programs, said Foundation Executive Director Keith Sutton. It also will allow us to begin creating online training opportunities that give educators a head start at implementing new programs in their communities. Without Pure Fishings support, this wouldnt have been possible. Were very appreciative theyve shown leadership in supporting youth fishing education programs throughout the U.S.

Pure Fishing also is supporting the Foundations new Tackle for Educators program, which is designed to provide reasonably priced tackle for use by youngsters learning how to fish.

Qualified educators who sign up for the program can purchase rods, reels, fly-fishing tackle, accessories and more from a portfolio of Pure Fishing brands that includes Shakespeare, Berkley, Stren, Pflueger, Mitchell, Johnson and more, said Teresa Rodriguez, the Foundations Director of Education.

Students in classrooms across America are learning everything from fish anatomy to how to bait hooks thanks to the Future Fisherman Foundation grant program. And with support from industry leaders like Pure Fishing, next year more students will be heading to the pond for final exams.

For more information on the popular fishing tackle brands from Pure Fishing, visit www.purefishing.com. To learn more about the Future Fisherman Foundation go to www.futurefisherman.org.

CAMDEN, S.C. (May 12, 2010) – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Wateree May 22 for the fourth of five stops in the South Carolina Division series. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“I would stick with offshore bank fishing,” said Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C., who has a BFL win on Lake Wateree and has over $1 million in pro career earnings. “The fish are going to be post spawn and getting ready to move into deeper water, I would concentrate on those transition areas in about 10-15 feet of water; I would be flipping jigs and soft plastics around piers and docks.”

Gagliardi added that Wateree is a river lake and that anglers should be watching out for big fluctuations in water levels this time of year; the rapid change in depths can really throw some anglers off their game.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Clearwater Cove Marina located at 2029 Baron Decalb in Camden, S.C. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division league circuit devoted to weekend anglers, that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers of the regional championship and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.

ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Hartwell May 8 for the third of five stops in the Savannah River Division series. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“This will be predominantly a post-spawn tournament,” said Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C., who has won more than $1 million in FLW Outdoors competition. “The post-spawn bite is really good on that lake and they’ll be biting baits such as (Zoom) Flukes or topwater baits. They could be anywhere from on points to schooling in open water. A lot of them haven’t moved out to the deeper water yet, so I’d check spawning grounds first.”

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Portman Marina located at 1629 Marina Rd. in Anderson, S.C. Takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

(Feb. 10, 2010) - The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Murray Feb. 20 for the first of five stops in the South Carolina Division series. As many as 400 pro and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

"(Lake Murray) is fishing pretty good right now," said Team Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C. "There was a tournament there about a week ago and it took about 24 pounds to win it. There's some decent fish being caught."

Gagliardi said anglers will rely on power techniques in the colored waters of Lake Murray. He said spinnerbaits, shallow crankbaits and flipping a jig will be popular among competitors.

Anglers will take off from Dreher Island State Park located at 3677 State Park Road in Prosperity at 7 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at Dreher Island State Park beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
