Capt. Ron Santee started out in rain with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, but everything was just fine for anglers on his first drift that yielded almost 20 keeper stripers. The northwest wind came on hard, and the bite was spotty before a return to the deep in the afternoon produced another flurry that also included bluefish.

Capt. Pete Wagner continues to limit on blackfish most days with his Hyper Striper from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. The Pete Wilcox party from Freehold limited today.

There was no repeat of the large bass bite of the day before in the Bay Head surf, though one angler reported hooking a big fish that got off. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, said he had reports of scattered shorts from Monmouth Beach and Sea Girt.

The original weather forecast of an easterly blow could hardly have been more wrong, as it was into the northwest by dawn. That wind is favorable for surfcasting, and should smooth the sea.

Capt. Rob Semkewyc said fishing keeps getting better. He ran his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands down the beach for plenty of big stripers along with shorts and even bluefish. All sorts of jigs worked, and the bite lasted all day. To top it off, Semkewyc spotted tuna. He saw birds between the channels on the way out, but continued south to get into bigger bass.

Capt. Ron Santee had his second straight day of great jigging action on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands

Surfcasting in northern Ocean County was poor this morning. I fished at Brick and never had a hit in very fishable surf, though Bob Correll of Bay Head lost a fish while casting next to me.

The only positive report came from an angler at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant who said he hit three bass in Mantoloking.

Bobby Natthews of Fishermen’s Den in Belmar Marina said blackfish results Friday on party boats there were generally good. Many anglers are buying white-legger crabs to take aboard party boats for better results.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (February 9, 2010) - Newcomer to the Bassmaster Elite Series Bradley Roy and fishing industry leaders Abu Garcia and Berkley entered into agreement for the upcoming 2010-tournament season. Effective January 29, 2010, Roy will fish his rookie season with Abu Garcia reels and rods along with Berkley line and soft baits.

"We are very excited to have Bradley fishing Abu Garcia and Berkley products," said David Lund, Vice President of Marketing. "Even as a rookie, Bradley shows the determination and grit of the seasoned pro when it comes to competitive fishing."

Featured on a video blog on Bassmaster.com, Roy will document the Elite Series season through his eyes. The videos will follow him throughout the season, which will be an account of the trials and emotions that this young angler will encounter during the 2010 season.

The Lancaster, Ky., native has risen from the ranks of the Bassmaster Southern Opens. Some anglers try for years to be among those who move up from the Opens, but Roy advanced after his first season. Roy is the youngest angler to ever compete on the Elite Series.

Roy has proven to be a force in BASS competitions. At age 13, he was the 2004 Bassmaster Junior World champion in the 11-14 age group, and as a seventeen year old he outperformed many other Kentuckians to earn the right to be the sole representative of his state in the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship.

"It is truly an honor to have Abu Garcia and Berkley as sponsors," said Bradley. "Both companies are the leader when it comes to innovation in the fishing industry. I am very thankful for their support for the upcoming 2010 Elite series."

December 14, 2009, 8:39PM

New Jersey anglers had a good weekend at Virginia Beach, according to complete results from Saturday's American Striper Association Tournament. As noted in yesterday's blog, Greg Nunn (19) of Hillsborough won the Angler of the Year title even though he ended up only in 10th place (not seventh as he believed right after the contest) during that final event of the tour. Ken Zwirko of Union won the event with a 40-pounder taken on Bunker Down, and added a bonus pound for releasing that bass alive to win by a half-pound.

Capt. Bryan Pieros of Lebanon had a great season with his Daylight, beating New Englanders on their home turf to win the North Division. He had won three of the last four tournaments, but was shut out in Virginia -- losing Angler of the Year to Nunn by 6.05 pounds. Matt Unsworth took fourth on The Mod Squad with a 35.10-pounder plus the bonus point for a live release, and won the division for boats 26 feet or smaller. Harry Svenson was 13th on Cheap Shot with a 30.55-pounder.

Though water temperatures are still high enough (44 degrees at Sandy Hook, and 10 degrees higher at the buoy outside N.Y. Harbor), and there seems to be plenty of sand eels around, striped bass fishing has been generally tough -- both in the surf and from boats.

Some surf regulars have been getting so discouraged that they're not even trying. Allen Riley is usually at Sandy Hook every morning except weekends, but even he will be staying in South Plainfield until there's some sign of fish there. He was the only angler on hand this morning, but there were no fish nor any sign of bait and birds.

I only saw one angler in Bay Head this morning, and just three at Point Pleasant. Dave Arbeitman of The Reel Seat in Brielle was coming off the beach after not getting a hit under relatively good conditions at dawn.

After lots of small stripers were encountered Saturday morning off the Highlands Briidge, the northern area dropped off to very little today. Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter at Atlantic Highlands said there was no bird action, though he did get some readings. The first drift was promising, but it dropped off quickly after that -- and only a few bass were jigged. A switch to eeling started producing keepers before the current died out.

Capt. Mike Bogan went north with the Gambler from Point Pleasant, but didn't find much up there. Capt. Bobby Bogan plans to head south with the Gambler tomorrow.

As good as the surfcasting has been in Island Beach State Park, it’s been generally very slow along the Shore north of there. The bluefin tuna caught Monday at Bay Head created a lot of excitment to make up for a lack of stripers. It looked like exactly the same thing this morning as several anglers cast into a fishable southeast wind, but I was surprised to see one marginally legal bass caught.

Lou Vargas of Fanwood worked the Sandy Hook surf for a 25-inch short bass on metal, and saw a smaller one released by another angler.

Capt. David DeGennaro of Hi-Flier from Barnegat said the weekend crowd near Barnegat Inlet interfered with striper jigging, but he was proud of the job his 11-year-old son Max did on an 18-pounder Friday with 10-pound spinning tackle while his older brother Nick fought another bass at the same time. DeGennaro is sailing open Thursday and Friday from 6a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 732 330-5674.

Capt. Rich Newallis Jr. of Just One More from Highlands trolled locally on Monday to catch 15 stripers up to 35 inches plus blues up to an 18-pounder in 52.1 degree waters. Another fish straightened out the heavy hook on a Tony Accetta Pet Spoon.

The prediction of northeast winds gusting up to 30 knots kept most boats in port, and discouraged surfcasters faced with rough surf on a cold morning. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands baited mostly short stripers, but much better is expected tomorrow in light winds. Betty & Nick’s Tackle in Seaside Park weighed in some bass during the day, and reported big blues were breaking off the Casino Pier at one point.

Leif Pettersen tried the Deal surf in the morning after having caught a 30-inch striper there Friday evening, but didn’t do anything this time. I took a look at the Bay Head surf in the morning, and only saw one angler fighting the waves. The regulars were drinking coffee in Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant while waiting for better conditions in the afternoon.

Friday’s report from the Cock Robin out of Point Pleasant came in too late for that night’s blog. Capt. Jim O’Grady started out to the north, but turned around to go south for a boat limit of stripers.

November 14, 2009, 7:20PM

With the wind finally shifting out of the northeast, and seas dropping down, anglers may finally be able to start fishing again even though small craft warnings remain in effect through Monday afternoon due to large waves and dangerous conditions at inlets on ebb tides.

Surfcasters will be dealing with a shoreline torn up by the northeaster. Beach buggy fishermen will have to be especially cautious while driving in areas open to them as water levels may still be higher than normal. In addition, there may be sudden drops plus dangerous debris on the beach. Walk-on anglers will find a much changed beach that could include drops from stairs leading to the sand, and troughs that fill with water as the tide rises. The sand in such troughs can be very soft, and what looks like an easy passage could result in the angler being sucked down. Step carefully, and be aware of the water deepening behind you. Fishing should be possible even in a still rough surf, but discolored waters may make lure fishing ineffective. Clams usually work best under such conditions.

There were no boat reports today, but most party boats will be shaping up in the morning. There could be heavy bird action over feeding stripers in the ocean, and that jigging action should improve during the week. Raritan Bay may be discolored, but should clear after a couple of tide changes. Clamming at Romer Shoal is normally hot after a northeaster.
