Ray at Grumpy’s Bait and Tackle said they have fluke in the surf and on the Barnegat North Jetty. The fish are hitting Gulp! baits. There is also good fishing for blackfish on the jetty with anglers using crab and clam baits. There should be some triggerfish and possible sheepshead on the jetty rocks this time of year. The rocks are worth a shot. There hasn’t been much word on stripers or bluefish. Tom Hansen and Mike Malek from the shop have taken off for Trinidad to compete in an annual tarpon tournament on the island. John Bushell, Jr. of Betty and Nick’s Bait and Tackle reported nice beach days by mid-week after the wind came around to the northwest. Bushell said Jeff Bissey had good action with fluke off Area 12 on Island Beach State Park. Pete Hallihan stopped into the shop and weighed in a 4.4-pound fluke he caught with Gulp! bait fishing off Two Bit Road on IBSP. Dane Schoeneberg at Grizz’s Bait and Tackle said they had reports of a big snapping turtle in Mill Pond in Forked River biting off everyone’s line. If you can get around the turtle there’s pretty good pickerel and catfishing in the pond. They had their first decent reports of blowfish of the season this week. An angler had a catch of 31 blowfish in the Barnegat Bay anchored up and chumming. The crabbing is still very good in the bay and peanut bunker and snapper blues are all over the place. The fluke are still plentiful but putting keepers in the boat remains tough in the bay. Out front the sea bass fishing has been good on the reefs with clam and squid baits. Offshore Dane said boats returned with catches of yellowfin tuna.

Fluke in Ambrose Channel: As noted in Wednesday's blog, fluking there was good enough to provide Capt. Sal Cursi and I both with limits in a few hours. If that indicates a movement out toward the ocean, other channels (Sandy Hook, Chapel Hill, and Raritan Reach) could be as good.

Sea bass on the reefs: While fluking on the reefs has been generally disappointing, sea bass fishing remains good.

Bluefish along the Shore: While pee-wees have been dominating, some schools of big blues have been located by party boats at various areas both north and south of Manasquan Inlet. Jigging has been working when the choppers are kocated. There's been nothing so far to depend on day after day.

Ling on offshore wrecks: Summer ling fishing has been good so far, especially on the Sunday and Monday night trips of the Gambler from Point Pleasant. Some cod are mixed in.

Though there have been some negative reports from Hudson Canyon, trollers have been doing well in Toms. Wayne Smith reports from Hoffman's Marina in Brielle that Quality Time from that marina trolled four yellowfin tuna up to 90 pounds. Joe Natoli's Janice released two white marlin while five yellowfins to 70 pounds and two dolphin were boated. The bluefin tuna fishery fell victim to greenish waters, but one boater reported finding some further to the east. Smith noted fluking in deep water and up to Shrewsbury Rocks has been good in the mornings when south winds aren't blowing. Sea bass fishing has been good on the Sea Girt and Carlsen reefs.

While fluking wasn't anything special for us in Ambrose Channel, Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I put Dr. George Gabuzda and his son Jeff from Wall into four legal fluke plus shorts and a couple of large sea bass this morning. Bob Correll of Bay Head reported similar action there while fishing with Capt. Joe Massa on My Three Sons from Morgan.

Capt. Jack Shea says fluking remains great in Barnegat Bay if you use ultra-light tackle to enjoy the sport since there's only one keeper in 40 to 50 fluke. He counted over 400 fluke in four trips with his Rambunctious last week.

Fluke: The JCAA Tournament will ensure that fluke anglers from one end of the state to the other will be on the water Saturday covering every likely spot. There haven't been many positive reports so far, especially in regard to keepers. The best bet for larger fish has been in 60-to-65-foot depths over rough ocean bottoms. Ambrose Channel, Raritan Reach and Barnegat Ridge are likely spots to encounter fluke large enough to win tournament prizes.

Striped bass: There was a memorable blitz along the northern Shore on Wednesday that produced at least three fifty-pounders plus numerous 40-and-30-pounders. Capt. Bob Pisano said the bass were moving fast, but almost all were over 30 pounds in the area from Asbury Park north. However, there were few reports of hot fishing Thursday. Bunker schools had been abundant in Raritan Bay, but there have been no reports of them in the last couple of days. Clamming has been very good at areas such as Flynn's Knoll and Swash Channel.

Bluefish: The Mud Hole is starting to produce large choppers both day and night for chummers. Jigs also work at times.

Sea bass: Fishing has been good at the reefs, but shorts often dominate.

Bluefin tuna: It's very early for this fishery, but the first schoolie was boated last weekend at Barnegat Ridge, and there was some hot trolling this week in the vicinity of A.C. Ridge. There have also been unconfirmed reports from the Mud Hole. Be sure to check the just-announced bluefin limits that I included in Friday's column.

Sharks: Threshers are starting to show up in bunker schools inshore. Some anglers will be looking for the first mako this weekend, but are more likely to find blue sharks -- if they can get through the spiny dogfish and bluefish. Good early season areas include the Resor, the Fingers, the Dusky Hole, Monster Ledge, and the Glory Hole.

Ling: There may be a spring run at the Scotland Grounds. The Voyager at Point Pleasant reported a good mix of ling with sea bass last weekend.

June 04, 2010, 1:52PM

Following is the balance of Friday's column that didn't make print:

Clammers were also enjoying hot bass action. Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper at Twin Lights has had consistent limit catches, and some Atlantic Highlands party boats are doing so well with bass on clams that they still haven’t switched to fluke. Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen reported a 23-pound striper on a clam during Wednesday’s first drift as the bite continued on-and-off until the hard ebb tide in the afternoon. That boat is chartered this afternoon, and every Saturday morning in June. Capt. Scotty Hilliard is also clamming on the Prowler during this best spring run in years. Sam Grbie of Westfield won Wednesday’s daytime pool with a 24-pound bass, and the 3:30 p.m. trip limited out in time for an early return.

Intensive bunker netting by bait boat purse seiners seems to have made those forage fish scarcer and bass fishing a picky proposition along the Shore. The Memorial Day weekend blitz of the last two years wasn’t repeated, but Nick Honachefsky of Normandy Beach was fortunate Wednesday when he fished with Mickey Malchiondo on Archangel. Bunkers were hard to snag in the morning, and they didn’t do anything until 2 p.m. In the next hour the fishing exploded as nine bass from 25 to 44 pounds were caught – with only the smallest retained. The fog made fishing difficult yesterday morning.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. had an unusual catch during Monday’s trip with his Jamaica from Brielle. There were no bass on bunkers, and clamming to the north was no good before he spotted schools of black drum from 55 pounds up on the surface. One school had at least 100 drum in it. Most anglers didn’t have adequate tackle, but Brian Roddy of Brick boated a 67-pounder. A few bass up to 25 pounds were under them. A late striper bite bailed out Sunday’s trip, when James Dempsey of Trenton boated a 35-pounder. Saturday night bluefishing 22 miles to the southeast was a pick all night and the best so far. Jamie Moore of Newark won the pool with a 16-pounder. After only jigging a few small blues Wednesday, Bogan moved north to jig where some bass to 20 pounds and 6-to-8-pound blues were located. Some drum with a few bass under them were spotted on the way back south. Jim Shabrach of Boyertown, Pa. boated both a 23-pound pool-winning bass and a 70-pound drum.

Fluking didn’t get off to a great start, but there have been some hopeful signs. Capt. Bobby Bogan of the Gambler from Point Pleasant had a good Wednesday afternoon trip that included a limit up to 3 ½ pounds by Kevin Pavone of Toms River, who also had about a half-dozen sea bass from the rough bottom in 65 feet. Dennis Wargo had four fluke up to 4 pounds plus six sea bass.

Capt. Joe Bogan of Jamaica II from Brielle had a poor start to fluking Saturday in deep water, but did better closer inshore on Sunday when Amy Liu of East Brunswick took the seasonal pool lead with a near-doormat 9-pound, 10-ounce fluke. Wednesday’s fishing was the best so far, three miles off in 60 feet. Ed Nolan of Manasquan had a limit to 4 pounds; Jin Kim of Paterson limited to 5 pounds; and James Chang from East Brunswick limited to 3 ½ pounds. A 3-ounce Spro bucktail tipped with spearing, along with squid strips rigged on a teaser above it was the best combination. Yesterday morning was also good as Sung Huang from Edison had a limit to 8 and 5 pounds by 10 a.m.

Capt. Stan Zagleski of Elaine B. at Highlands has had plenty of action with short fluke while catching some keepers. Ed Stefanski of Maplewood boated a 5.8-pounder, and John Houghtaling from Franklin Lakes bagged four to 5.3 pounds.

Capt. Ed Bunting of the Sea Horse from Atlantic Highlands counted 25 to 30 keeper fluke Saturday, but 45 to 50 on Sunday as afternoon trips were most productive. Danny Comerford had a 5 ½-pounder Sunday.

Phillip Sciortino reported a most unusual weekend catch from The Tackle Box in Hazlet as Shane Burke of Holmdel said he caught two 31-pound stripers on the same popper at North Beach. It’s not too unusual to hook two blues on the same plug, but this is the first time I’ve heard of two big bass being caught in that manner.

Sheila Miranda of Hoboken boated two 4-pound fluke in Sandy Hook Bay on the new Slimers 4-inch split-tail bait.

May 24. Fog, rain and north east winds. What a great day to fish. Setup on some good readings off Sandy Hook today and caught a couple of Bass right away. Thought this was going to be a slam of a day. It was a pick of Bass after the fast start with the Bass just mouthing the clams. We worked at it all morning and managed to fill the fish box with Bass to 36inches. Turned out to be a decent day after all.
Capt. Karl
PrimeTimeCharters
Capt. Karl
PrimeTimeCharters
