Bob Matthews at Fisherman’s Den in Belmar said the fluking is still good in the Shark River with the rental boats getting two to three keepers per trip. The better anglers are coming back with more. Matthews is hoping the weather doesn’t hurt the last few days of fluke season too badly. The kingfishing is also good with nice catches reported inside the inlet. One angler landed 10 the other day on worms. Surf guys are doing well on bass with fly rods and plugs with teasers. The snapper fishing continues strong and guys are doing will with blackfish on crabs. Capt. Ron Kish of the Capt. Cal II reported he’s fishing in 70 feet of water on mussel beds and doing real well with nice sea bass. There are also a number of keeper fluke in the mix. Capt. Howard Bogan of the Big Jamaica, Brielle said the bluefishing couldn’t be any better than it is right now. They are biting on jigs and bait. On Wednesday’s trip, Capt. Bogan reported false albacore and skipjacks mixed in with the blues. Capt. Captain Greg Markert of the Golden Eagle. Belmar, said customers are reeling in blues until their arms are too tired to reel anymore. Greg Bogan of Brielle Bait and Tackle reported Lee Karosen of Manasquan caught two school stripers in the early morning surf on clams. He also weighed in a 6-pound fluke for Greg Jewell, Manasquan, he got off Sea Girt.

Ronny Bala at Fisherman’s Supply reported the fluke fishing was good in the Manasquan River this week. Ashley Hawes, 9, of Brielle, had five fluke up to 17 1/2-inches fishing with Gulp! bait. Blowfish have moved into the Upper Barnegat Bay. Anglers are finding them around Dale’s Point. Big bluefish showed up a quarter-mile off the Mantoloking beaches. They were big fish up to 15 pounds. “A lot of bait moved in. We’ll have to wait and see how the fishing shapes up after the hurricane,” Bala said. Capt. Bob Bogan of the Gambler reports the fishing has been changing constantly. “Not just day to day but almost hour by hour.” On a morning trip this week, they caught fluke and sea bass but it wasn’t very good. In the afternoon, the fishing picked up and anglers caught small weakfish, big blues and keeper fluke up to 5 pounds. Tommy Kilgannon at Pell’s Bait and Tackle reports people fishing the Manasquan River are mostly catching fluke. In Barnegat Bay, the snapper blues are getting bigger. “They’re almost bluefish,” he said. People are catching them with spearing. In the bay, blowfish are also beginning to hit hook baits and the crabbing remains good. In the Point Pleasant Canal, nighttime anglers are catching a few stripers on live eels and soft plastic shads. Blackfish are also biting in the canal. Dennis Palmatier at Murphy’s Hook House said the crabbing is still excellent from Island Heights to Good Luck Point in Barnegat Bay. The snapper blues are all over and ranging between 6 to 8 inches. Over by the BB buoy, there is a decent run of blowfish going on. Anglers anchoring up and chumming heavy with clam chum have caught up to 50 of them. Mixed in with them have been small croakers and burr fish.

It was yet another day suitable for small boats on the ocean despite all the premature worries about big swells that are probably still another day away. Bluefish cooperated again, and quantities of little tunny were finally running through the slick of Miss Belmar Princess as Capt. Len Forsyth anchored 15 miles east of Shark River Inlet. He also had skipjacks in the slick, and noted that his anglers have even jigged an occasional cod out there. Capt. Jim O’Grady of the Cock Robin from Point Pleasant also had little tunny in his slick plus some bonito. Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported 7-to-15-pound blues on his Jamaica from Brielle plus little tunny and skipjacks.

Jesse York of Atlantic Beach, N.Y. said one of his Long Island boats had a good day with school bluefin tuna, bringing in theprivate boat limitwith a 90-pounder. York was fluking on Cholera Bank, and managed a 22-inch N.Y. keeper — but said that fishing was slow due to the lack of drift on a calm sea with no wind until the afternoon.

Bruce Vitale of Piscataway was fishing aboard Funny Pharm from Highlands as the crew caught three legal fluke from among lots of shortseast of Sandy Hook Channel.

While other species have their moments, bluefish have been responding consistently in the ocean. Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reports continued hot action today on his Jamaica from Brielle. The blues ran from 7 to 15 pounds, and hit best on bait — though jiggers also did well.

Capt. Bob Pennington loaded up with big blues Monday at Shark River Reef, where it was necessary to make only one move with his Sea Devil from Point Pleasant.

Allen Riley of South Plainfield, and his brother Ed of Edison, fished the morning trip of Sea Tiger II from Atlantic Highlands, but found even short fluke hard to come by. Ed had only one short, while Allen came up with three small sea robins. He had one big thrill, but it turned out to be a doubleheader of horseshoe crabs. There were only a few keepers aboard up to a 2 1/2-pounder.

Capt. Stan Zagleski reports he’s been fighting a wind against tide situation the last two days with his Elaine B. from Highlands. Yet, he moved around a lot today and managed a decent fluke catch under the circumstances. Al Warinis of Trenton, John Porada from Pompton Lakes, and Carmine Florio of Belleville each had three keepers.

Nick Honachefsky of Normandy Beach fished Barnegat Bay with Brian Keating and Mike Barlogon Killer Bea as they bucktailed Gulp to catch over 40 shorts — but also boated fluke of 3.2, 3.5, and 6.5 pounds.

Capt. Russ Binns of Toms River fished with a friend at Shrewsbury Rocks and nearby areas for a dozen large porgies plus sea bass, but no fluke.

Wayne Smith, at Hoffman’s Marina in Brielle, didn’t have much good news from the canyon over the weekend, though some wahoo are starting to show out there. The best report was from the Impulse, which had a 50-pound wahoo and two albacore while also releasing an 80-pound swordfish. Some boaters caught school bluefins in the Compass Rose area, including JoeVezzosi who weighed a 90-pounder.

Smith said fluking remains tough, but Capt. Bob Lake of Kimberly Ann had Ron Masseralli with him as both limited with fluke up to 8 pounds during the week at the Rattlesnake.

Capt. Joe Bogan has been scratching out some large fluke on rough bottoms in 60 to 90 feet with his Jamaica II from Brielle. Dale Isaacs of Manchester had a limit up to 5 pounds during the week. Saturday night bluefishing was good for 10-to-12-pounders, as fares averaged eight to 15 choppers. The Jamaica II has openings on a 3 a.m. Sept. 7 cod trip.

The Sea Devil from Point Pleasant had a good shot of big blues Saturday on the east side of the Mud Hole.

The most valuable bluefish was a 15.94-pounder caught by Eric Hunan of East Setaucket, Long Island to win the WICC Greatest Bluefish Contest on Earth Tournament in Long Island Sound. The winner was weighed at Caraftis Fishing Station in Brookhaven.

Dave Lilly of Hazlet and his Team Esca crew boated 17 large fluke in the depths of Ambrose Channel.

Bruce Vitale of Piscataway was intent on catching a big fluke in Chapel Hill Channel from Funny Pharm, owned by Mike Obuch of Bridgewater. He quickly caught a 20 1/2-incher that was returned since it was a half-inch short of a N.Y. keeper. Everything went downhill from there as the big fluke didn’t cooperate — and we caught only a few small fluke and three dogfish. Most unusual was Obuch’s catch of a small kingfish that was snagged on a fluke rig in Ambrose Channel — the first kingfish I’ve ever seen there.

There was no lack of fluke today in Ambrose Channel. Edison native Joe Greco (now of Ft. Myers, Fl.), Harold Smith of Matawan and I joined Gene Graman of Middletown on his That’s It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands late in the morning to fish for fluke in Ambrose Channel. We not only caught short fluke and sea robins steadily, but watched fluke being released from the other private and charter boats in the area. Some short sea bass were added when we moved further east in Ambrose. Smith boated a 21 1/4-inch fluke on a plain 4-inch Gulp Swimming Mullet in chartreuse, and Greco had a 19 1/2-incher, but the best I could do were two 17 1/2-inch shorts. Graman also briefly tried the point of the Hook, but that was all small shorts and robins.

Chris Cowanfished off Sandy Hook in the morning in order toget out of the northwest wind that was gusting at that time before it became a beautiful day with good drifting conditions. He said the fluking was the worst he’s had off Sandy Hook, with only a few shorts and robins. Sandy Hook Channel was even worse. Cowan noted that he heard the same sort of commentsfrom other boaters back at the ramp.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported bluefishing held up Thursday night and Friday at the Mud Buoy, as everyone aboard the Jamaica from Brielle caught big blues. Bait was better than jigs today.

A private boater didn’t find any school tuna at Chicken Canyon, but heard of a bite on jigs east of the Virginia — the same general area where Long Island anglers had them before the storm. He got there as the last couple ofbluefins were being fought.

Nick Honachefsky of Normandy Beach caught an 18-inch fluke in his local surf on Thursday morning. He also spotted fish working on a bunker school offshore before a plane spotted them and the bunker fleet moved in to wipe them out.

Fluke are cooperating for anglers as the season winds down to its Labor Day closure. The unexpected northeast wind made for rough conditions in Ambrose Channel. Bruce Vitale of Piscataway fished with Mike Obuch of Bridgewater on his Funny Pharm from Highlands in a big fleet that broke up during the day due to the uncomfortable conditions. Nevertheless, fluke bit well as they picked six keepers up to Obuch’s 5.8-pounder plus a bluefish.

Capt. Stan Zagleski of Elaine B. from Highlands had a fine Friday in the bay, starting off with a bite in the channel before the current got too strong. A move produced the largest fluke of the day. Jim Talcott of Highlands, who caught his personal best9 3/8-pounder July 26 on the Elaine B., boated an 8 9/16-pounder before his friend, Jeffrey Blakeney of Brick, hooked a 6 3/16-pound fluke.

Capt. Sal Cursi worked Ambrose on Friday with his Cathy Sea from Sewarenfor a good catch of fluke up to 22 inches.

Ross Goldberg ran his Lady J. from Belmar to the north for his best bite of the season with limit catches up to 6.5 pounds for the crew. Party boats did well drifting the rough bottom off Deal yesterday.

Capt. Joe Bogan of Jamaica II at Brielle reported much improved fluking since the swell dropped off and the water cleared. Catches have ranged up to 8 pounds.

The surf at Bay Head was strangelyunproductive inthe morning, except for one angler who landed a 24 1/2-inch fluke — by far the largest I’ve seen there this summer.

Allen Riley of South Plainfield noted that the National Park Service has finally taken pity on human beings and opened up some of the beach that had been closed to prevent piping plovers from being disturbed.

Capt. Hans Kaspersetz ran a Friday overnighter to Hudson Canyon with his Maggie K. from Bayville. A yellowfin tuna and a dolphin wereboated, and a white marlin was released when he checked out the Texas Tower area this morning. Kaspersetzpassed through Chicken Canyon, where the water was off-color.

Capt. Bob Pisanoboated a yellowfin and an albacore plus dolphin from Antonette out of Briellewhile pulling hooks on a few others, including a bigeye during a Thursday overnighter on the west wall of Hudson Canyon. It was probably another bigeye that dumped a 30 W. He released a 40-pound swordfish at night. Pisano tried chunking for bluefin at Chicken Canyon on the way back after finding blue water at the east end while the rest was green. That didn’t work out, though boats fishing toward Long Island continue to jig big school bluefins.

Capt. Sarge Batrouny of Brielle, former skipper of the Oasis at Atlantic Highlands, passed away this week at 78.

Bob Matthews at Fisherman’s Den in Belmar said it’s a mixed bag of fishing with lots to choose from. The size of the fluke, at least from the ocean, is improving with more keepers being caught. There’s plenty of fluke in the river, but you just have to wade through a lot of shorts. Matthews did report some very nice blackfish are being caught on the rough bottom, with a 14-pounder reported. Currently, there’s a one-fish limit for tog. He also said the party boats are reporting a return of big drum and the there’s lots of bait, peanut bunker and mullet, in the river. Capt. Ron Kish of the Capt. Cal says there’s plenty of life out there with his customers getting nice mixes of fluke and sea bass. Guys are getting three keeper fluke and 8 to 10 sea bass. You just have to get through the shorts. Capt. Greg Markert of the Golden Eagle, Belmar, reports bluefishing is looking up, as the large blues took Ava 47 jigs on Tuesday. The blues were the large variety 10 to 12 pound choppers with plenty of attitude. He believes things are looking good. He reported a change in the tuna schedule so check the website, www.goldeneaglefishing.com for updates. Captain Francis Bogan’s 100-foot Paramount returned to the dock Tuesday with good catches of sea bass. Sam Cohen, Princeton, had 18 keeper sea bass, two ling and one blackfish, Cai Chen, Harrison, had his limit of sea bass along with a keeper fluke and John Moon, Jersey City, 12 sea bass as well as the pool winning fluke, a 7 1/2 pounder.
