March 28, 2010, 9:07PM

Though shoreline fishermen have been catching stripers, including many keepers, in Raritan Bay for a couple of weeks, there wasn't a breakthrough from boats until Saturday. Capt. Lou Grazioso of Striper Mania reported his mate, Matt Calabria, used Chuck Many's aluminum boat, Tyman III, to clam four keepers out of 40 bass while fishing out of Keyport. Grazioso will launch Striper Mania this week, berthing it at Peterson's in Keyport.

On the other hand, Dave Lilly of Hazlet had the same experience this Sunday as he did the previous Sunday. He did find the water temperature in the back of the bay up from 39 degrees to a "balmy" 40 degrees, but once again didn't mark any bait or fish -- and saw no birds dipping or any other sign that stripers were present after clamming off the Keansburg Pier and trolling. A wind against tide situation didn't help.

Though there were gale warnings up tonight for clearing northwest winds, that should work in our favor on Sunday even if it's likely to be cool. Boaters should be able to fish close to shore as northwest winds knock down seas, and surfcasters will have the wind at their back.

Stripers hit at many spoints along the Shore during the beginning of the northeaster this morning. Leif Pettersen eamed with Ben and Tony Green for a dozen releases up to 26 inches at Deal on 2-and-3-ounce Avas with teasers. Jay Russell of Brick fished Sea Girt for nine small bass on an Ava 07. Bob Correll of Wyckoff relesed two stripers while throwing metal in a big crowd at Point Pleasant. There was a pick of bass all along the beach, except for me -- as a sand dab was the only fish willing to hit my metal.

There were no boat reports today.

Big swells on the ocean and worries about muddy waters flowing into the bays from recent flooding seems to have slowed fishing to a crawl as there have been no reports. Though the hurricane is still far offshore, there’s a marine forecast calling for lower waves in the surf tomorrow than the 5-to-9-footers that were predicted today. Hopefully, we’ll be able to fish the beaches under more reasonable conditions this weekend. There’s been no word on fluking since Monday, and both dirty water and big swells (in the ocean) are usually negatives in that fishery. This is your last shot at sea bass for awhile, as that fishery shuts down Sunday night until November 1.

CORRECTION: The Hudson River Fishermen’s Association meeting noted in my blog “Balance of Friday’s Column” is on Tuesday, Sept. 20 — not this coming Tuesday.

Gale warnings -- and rain

The weather forecast all week has been terrible, even though the reality for inshore anglers wasn't as bad as predicted. Nevertheless, it scared away fishermen to such an extent that there haven't been any reports since Tuesday. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a fine little tunny and bonito trip Tuesday, but Capt. John Brackett then cancelled his Wednesday and Thursday trips based on the forecast. He hopes to fish again Friday, but the forecast really doesn't look favorable until Saturday.

I looked at the Bay Head surf this morning, and it seemed fishable even though there was no sign of any life. Phillip Sciortino reports from the Tackle Box in Hazlet that some weakfish are being caught on both bait and lures from the bay shores, particularly at Belford. It's mostly a night bite, but some are being taken at dawn and dusk.
