The gale warnings posted for offshore waters on Tuesday must have kept anglers ashore. Even Capt. Jimmy Elliott conceded to the weather, and will probably do so again on Wednesday to wait out the clearing northwester. The Golden Eagle did get out from Belmar Monday, but Elliott said mackerel fishing wasn’t as good as he hoped for despite better conditions. Mackerel were very scattered, though there were plenty of herring — which are a good substitute for those seeking to load their freezers with bait for the upcoming season. Offshore water temperatures remain high (in the upper 40s), and the main body of mackerel may not even have arrived as yet. A striped bass in the 20-pound class was caught to the east on Monday, but released in the federal waters Elliott was fishing.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported slower offshore wreck fishing over the weekend due to high winds and strong currents, but some cod and good quantities of ling were caught on the Jamaica from Brielle. That boat fishes from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and leaves at 11 p.m. Friday for Saturday’s 50-to-100-mile wreck trip. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.

Elliott heard that a boat ran into diving birds outside of Shark River Inlet on Sunday, and found small stripers under them.

Should get better when water finally turns much colder.

Striped bass: The boat action has been from Shark River up to Shrewsbury Rocks, but anything could happen after the storm. Joe Mellillo at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant said night fishing had been good before the storm for 24-to-28-inch bass on jetties from Belmar north at night. The surf is very dirty from the storm, but should clean up with a couple of tide changes. Melillo said the water temperature went up with the storm.

Blackfish:There had been good action inshore in 65-foot depths before the storm. The bottom water has been several degrees warmer than the surface. There’s now some action further off at 17 Fathoms.

Bluefin tuna: Unbelievably, there were bluefins surfacing off the Spring Lake Hotel in 65 feet on Wednesday.

Joe Melillo reported no action among regulars at Castaways Tackle in Point Peasant. I fished in that town at daylight and never had a touch while plugging despite good conditions. Joe Blaze of Brielle fly fished at Spring Lake with the same results. I was surprised to count six anglers within sight — an unusual “crowd” for a Monday in mid-January, when even one would normally be a lot.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. said his Gamaica from Brielle had very good ling fishing Sunday along with a few cod. The next trips are Saturday and Sunday from 4 a.m. to5 p.m.

By Al Ristori

April 03, 2010, 9:18PM

Capt. Stan Zagleski started his season with Elaine B. from Highlands in Shrewsbury River on Friday, and enjoyed a decent pick of winter flounder during the change of tide. He had started in the bay, but found very dirty waters and no hits before returning to the river. About 50 flounder were caught, including a dozen keepers. Elaine B. sails daily at 7:30 a.m. for 3/4-day fishing, but the Easter Sunday trip returns by 11:30.

Capt. Lou Grazioso called Saturday morning to report a pick of stripers up to 30 inches while clamming in the back of Raritan Bay from his Striper Mania out of Keyport.

Capt. John Kolias ran his first trip on Friday with friends on Reel Fun from Sea Bright. Though the waters were clear in the river, they were still dirty in the back of the bay where they broke the ice during a short trip with a short striper and a legal flounder.

The Jamaica from Brielle has scheduled a tilefish/wreckfish trip for Thursday, May 13 at 11 p.m. The cost is $260 with a limit of 26 anglers. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.

Striped bass anglers are running out of party boats to fish aboard. Capt. Bobby Bogan will look for bass Thursday and Friday with his Gambler from Point Pleasant before switching to daily cod and ling on Saturday.

At Brielle, the Jamaica II has been doing well with ling. Alex Rajnai of Carteret boated a near-record 7-pound, 3-ounce ling. Eric Crane of Trenton totaled 61 ling, three cod and five sea bass. Tom Belvoir from Camden had 34 ling, and 18-pound cod — and a 3-pound lobster.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. concluded his sea bass season on the Jamaica in fine form on Dec. 31 with some limits. Dimitrios Kapetankis of Freehold caught a 7-pound sea bass, and Rob Finkle of Sparta hooked a 30-pound pollock. The Jamaica is now fishing for cod and ling at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.

There were no reports from this morning’s deep freeze. Joe Melillo reported from Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant that even the regulars stayed home, but a few bass were caught Tuesday evening at Point Pleasant and Manasquan. Somewhat milder temperatures are forecast for Thursday.

The Paramount is sailing open for ling and cod during 10 1/2-hour Marathons on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
