April 30, 2010, 8:08PM

Striped bass fishing Friday may have been the best of the season in terms of the many areas and techniques that produced fish, as limit catches were routine. The Rockaways were the hot spot in Thursday's northwester, but there was no sign of fish off the Marine Parkway Bridge when Hans Kaspersetz of Weehawken and I arrived there on Dr. Ray Flagiello's 25-foot Edgewater from Brielle Yacht Club. A call about bass being trolled at Shrewsbury Rocks sent us back there. We did troll a few bass there and off Long Branch, but jiggers were doing better in the large fleet. Before leaving, we came across stripers feeding on rainfish near the surface, but they wouldn't hit the larger shad jigs we were using. Ray came up with a small Crippled Herring that worked. The bass we caught both trolling and jigging averaged about 33 inches, and there were only two shorts on jigs. Just two small blues interfered on the shad trolling rigs.

Capt. Bud Mc Arthur was also there on his Splinter from Brick, and enjoyed the jigging as well as casting shad jigs to surfacing bass after having been shut out the previous day.

Don and Al Marantz limited on bass while jigging from Miss Belmar Princess. Surprisingly, Al said there were no bluefish caught.

Tom Fote of Toms River led a party on Capt. Lou Grazioso's Striper Mania from Keyport, as he, Jose Fernandez of Marlton, former Bergen County Republican Assemblyman John Rooney, and marine biologist Eleanor Bohanchek of Cape May managed four keeper stripers plus shorts while clamming. The feature of that trip was Bohanchek's surprising blackfish that hit on the last day of the season -- and weighed 10 pounds at Crabby's Tackle in Keyport. Grazioso went out again later in the afternoon with Matt Calabria of Hazlet and Art Berkman. Using bunkers, they got into a great bite of large stripers, topped by Berkman's 31-pound release. Poppers and shad jigs also worked.

Capt. Sal Cursi ran his Cathy Sea from Sewaren east of the Rockaways before hitting a mass of surfacing bass. There were no blues in them yesterday, but today they dominated while trolling. Cursi's anglers did better with bass as they limited while jigging.

Chuck Many of Annandale had live bunkers in the morning, and fished both in the ocean south of Sandy Hook and in the bay later in the afternoon as his crew caught about 50 bass on Tyman II from Highlands.

John Green of Brick didn't find anything in the southern Monmouth County surf, as even the bluefish didn't hit well in Island Beach State Park. However, he did hear of a bass blitz late in the morning at Long Branch.

Capt. Russ Binns of Coast Boating School said one of his instructors clobbered bluefish in Great Bay, near the old fish factory, but those blues wouldn't hit poppers. Metal lures produced all the fish.

April 16, 2010, 9:10PM

Has anyone noticed that with all the fishing action going on now, there hasn't been a single mention of mackerel? From the time I started saltwater fishing on Long Island well over half a century ago, mackerel have been showing up in New York Bight during April before providing action into May. Yet, that hasn't been happening the last few years, and I've yet to hear of a single mackerel so far this spring. There have been no reports south of us, where mackerel first show from Virginia north as they move steadily to the northeast to stay ahead of the bluefish. Even though this has been the case for several years, this is the first time I haven't had a single call from a party indicating that they would even be looking for mackerel this spring.

Capt. Jimmy Elliott of Miss Belmar Princess specializes in mackerel during the productive late-fall to winter run, but he says it's been six or seven years since he last had a spring run to fish. Elliott has been striper fishing with success, but he says those fish moved out over the three-mile limit a couple of days ago. However, the Ocean Explorer from Belmar did get into bass outside of Shark River Inlet on the way in during early afternoon Friday.

April 11, 2010, 8:49PM

Striped bass have arrived earlier than ever along the Shore and in Raritan Bay. Several years ago there were a couple of seasons that opened with large bass on bunker chunks off Staten Island during late April, but that only repeated one more year -- and was later in the month than the present run. The last two springs have been poor in the bay, and the early clam fishing has been very inconsistent, but it now appears that a good body of larger bass has moved in.

Chuck Many of Annandale said bunkers have been hard to come by, but those he managed to castnet Friday and Saturday from his Tyman II out of Highlands produced lots of mostly teen-size stripers around Raritan Reach each of those evenings. His crew released over 40 bass Friday.

Dave Lilly of Hazlet trolled in the ocean off Sandy Hook on Sunday morning to catch a dozen bass from 33 to 37 inches on spoons, jigs and diving plugs. The smaller Maja herring spoon was best as he trolled in 21 feet.

Capt. Jimmy Elliott got into jigging bass Sunday from the tip of Sandy Hook down to Long Branch. There were 35 to 40 keepers plus many releases from Miss Belmar Princess.

Weekend prospects are looking good, with temperatures going back up to the fifties.

Striped bass: Surfcasters continue to pick away at mostly short bass. I plugged one Thursday morning at Point Pleasant (and lost another), and plugged another at dusk. There was a surf blitz of mostly 15-to-20-pound stripers from Point Pleasant to Mantoloking on Wednesday afternoon, but there were no birds or fish the next afternoon.

There will be no party boats fishing for stripers after the Gambler from Point Pleasant completes Friday’s trip before switching to daily cod and ling on Saturday. The Gambler picked a dozen keepers and 20 shorts while jigging Thursday on readings south of the inlet. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands quit after Sunday, but had been into lots of shorts and some keepers under birds between the channels.

Mackerel: None have been caught so far, but the winter run is overdue. Capt. Jimmy Elliott begins daily 7 a.m. trips to the Mud Hole with the Golden Eagle from Belmar. Miss Belmar Princess will be doing likewise.

Blackfish: These fish are still being caught in relatively shallow waters. Capt. Stan Zagleski had a good catch from Elaine B.out of Highlands in just 65 feet, about 3 1/2 miles offshore, on Thursday. While the surface temperature was 44 degrees, it was a “balmy” 50 degrees on the bottom.

Cod: After the best local codfishing in decades ast winter, there’s been no end to the season as cod were caught throughout the summer at areas such as Shark River Reef. The week before Christmas we jigged cod in relatively shallow waters at Shrewsbury Rocks.

Ling:Large quantities are being caught on deep Mud Hole wrecks and at Shark River Reef. Many are small, but there are enough large ling to make the effort worthwhile.

Following is the balance of Friday’s column that didn’t make print:
At Belmar, Capt. Jimmy Elliott expects to get the winter mackerel season started at 7 a.m. tomorrow when he sails the Golden Eagle to the Mud Hole. Capt. Rich Falcone ran to the north on Monday for six legal bass and nearly 30 shorts. A 34-pound bass was boated last Friday, and a few blues were still being jigged on Dec. 30.
Capt. Len Forsythe had the most spectacular party boat catch on Dec. 30 aboard Miss Belmar Princess when Sean Litwine from Hunterdon County hooked a 61-inch bluefin tuna on a jig at Shrewsbury Rocks. Don Marantz of Clarksburg reported that tuna was also fought on 60-pound braid by other patrons and the mate before being subdued. Estimated at 175 to 180 pounds, it was a miracle that the bluefin didn’t strip the reel before Forsythe could follow it. Stripers were later located off Asbury Park, where a dozen keepers up to 19 pounds were boated and 35 to 40 shorts released. Miss Belmar Princess switches to mackerel tomorrow.
At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter had a shot of 17 cod at the Rocks on Saturday before finding two miles of birds between the channels. It was mostly shorts, though three bass were boated. The Sea Hunter finished up Sunday, when even a few blues were jigged. Capt. Ron Santee had a successful season-ender on Saturday with his Fishermen.
At Brielle, Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. finished the sea bass season Saturday with some limits of jumbos from far offshore wrecks on his Jamaica. A bluefin tuna and a lobster were added to the catch that also included a 35-pound pollock for Duc Lai of Landing, a 30-pounder by Rob Finkle from Sparta, and a 20-pounder for Joe Blushstein from Vineland. Dimitrios Kapetankis of Freehold bagged a 7-pound sea bass. The Jamaica is sailing for cod and ling at 4 a.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
Capt. Joe Bogan reports good ling fishing on his Jamaica II, up to the 7 3/16-pounder by Alex Rajnai of Carteret. Eric Cone of Trenton caught 61 ling, three cod, four white hake, and five sea bass. Tom Belvoir from Camden had 34 ling, an 18-pound cod – and a 3-pound lobster
The Paramount is running open 10 ½-hour Marathons for ling and cod from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. John Watson of Burlington had 29 ling and one cod on Jan. 1.
The Tackle Box in Hazlet reports jetty anglers have been catching stripers at night from Asbury Park to Long Branch on Bombers, Tsunami Minnows, and shad lures. Rich Swisstack of Cliffwood used a shad to fool a 20-pounder. Swisstack is one of the experts instructing at Phil Sciortino’s Striper School. Call 732 264-7711 for information.
Saltwater anglers are required to have a free 2012 N.J. registration. Google N.J. saltwater registration. Those also fishing in N.Y. waters require a separate free registration from the N.Y. D.E.C. web site.

Captains Bob and Mike Bogan wish they didn’t decide to make the move from stripers to cod on Saturday after the results of the last two days on the Gambler from Point Pleasant. Mike only fished the Mantoloking pipe on Thursday for a a dozen keepers up to 20 pounds plus 20 shorts — and even a 10-pound cod. However, it appeared this morning that the south wind had killed that action. I jigged a 31-inch bass on a 6-ounce Run-Off Hammered jig, but the only other keeper was a similar bass jigged by mate Kevin Pavone - and there was just one short. Bogan couldn’t work the pipe properly with the change in wind, and eventually made the run south to the Seaside pipe – where just one short was jigged. Back north at the Mantoloking pipe there was no action at all except for the winter season’s first mackerel on a teaser. It looked like a poor ending to the very extended striper season before the skipper moved north and found some gannets diving just north of Shark River Inlet. The first drift produced instant hook-ups with a variety of sizes, and the second resulted in several 15-to-20-pound bass being boated. Mike Bogan came down to jig the largest of 25 to 30 pounds, and he reported the Renegade from Point Pleasant (the only other boat out there) had a 40-pounder. Most anglers caught at least one or two keepers, but there were also bass as small as 20 inches. All in all, it was an incredible sight for January 6. Where were all those bass in November?

There should be more mackerel reports Saturday as the Golden Eagle and Miss Belmar Princess run out of Belmar to the Mud Hole to get the winter season started.

Joe Melillo, of Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant surf-fished locally in the afternoon, and only had one hit while plugging — though Kenny Reed of that town released a 30-inch striper when they first arrived.

Don Marantz didn’t do well jigging stripers aboard Miss Belmar Princess today, but he witnessed a most unusual event when a bluefin tuna in the 150-pound class was boated at Shrewsbury Rocks. It hit a jig worked by an angler from Hunterdon County, but was a group effort also fought by the mate and other patrons on tackle a tuna that size would normally strip in the blink of an eye. Capt. Len Forsyth followed the tuna until the most unusual catch was secured. Striper fishing was poor at the Rocks, but working birds were later located off Asbury Park where shorts and a few keeper bass were caught.

Capt. Rob Semkewyc also found slim pickings in the morning at the Rocks from his Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands. Only some short bass and a single cod were caught before moved Between the Channels. A keeper was caught on two drifts there along with some shorts.

Joe Blaze of Brielle and I walked on at Island Beach State Park this morning, but he never had a hit on fly nor did I on metal. We did see two keeper bass caught. One was weighed at Betty & Nick’s in Seaside Park at 12 1/4 pounds by Mark Barnes of Garnet Valley,Pa. It hit a teaser. The surf had cleaned up and flattened down – and it was a beautiful mild day on the beach. Reports were no better to the north. Allen Riley of South Plainfield wrapped up his season at Sandy Hook with Lou Vargas of Fanwood as they had the beach to themselves under ideal conditions — but no fish.

Capt. Jimmy Elliott returned from his trip on Miss Belmar Princess with the hoped-for catch of cod after a Mararthon trip that started Friday night. After a slow start, Elliott got into a good bite that produced a high hook in the teens while most anglers caught around 10 cod. The largest cod was about 18 pounds. Friday night trips will continue this weekend, but there are only a few spots left on Miss Belmar Princess. Call Elliott at 732 284-9709.

Rob DeYoung of Lyndhurst had to go a lot further for a great fishing trip. He recently returned from Lsla Mujeres, Mexico where Pete Norcia joined him to release 121 Atlantic sailfish in four days. Most of those were caught while feeding on bait balls. They chartered the Qualifier, which fishes during the season out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center in North Carolina.

Capt. Frank Dubis still has some spots open at his Boating Safety course to be held Feb. 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. in Hackensack Yacht Club. Call for reservations at 201 716-2883.

The Fishermen's Rally in Washington on Wednesday was a big success as it attracted about 4,000 fishermen plus lots of congressmen on a nice day for an outdoor event surrounded by two terrible ones -- with heavy rain on Tuesday and a snowstorm Thursday. See details about it in Friday's column.

There was such a rush by fishermen to get down there that I was almost shut out. Buses were sold out at every port, but Warren Deshay invited me to jump on the bus chartered by Vinny Spadafora for his Long Key Marina customers in Waretown. We had plenty of company soon after arriving in Washington, where I ran into old friends from other states such as famed skipper Bob Rocchetta from Long Island, and Harry Aiken from Delaware.

Weather conditions make weekend fishing problematical. Capt. Jimmy Elliott cancelled his Friday night trip for Block Island cod on Miss Belmar Princess. He won't be going next Friday night while celebrating his 40th birthday, but expects to schedule an overnight wreck trip shortly.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. hopes to get weekend wreck trips in with his Jamaica from Brielle, leaving at 11:30 the night before. Call 732 528-5014 for information.

The Salt Water Sportsman seminar will be held Saturday from 9 to 3 at Monmouth Regional H.S. in Tinton Falls. Call 800 448-7360 to determine if any of the $55 tickets are available.

Capt. John Cafiero provides a free striped bass seminar at 11 a.m. Saturday at Causeway Marine in Manahawkin. There's also free refreshments and door prizes, but please call Causeway Marine for reservations.
